How discount calculations work

The final price after a discount is the original price minus the discount amount, where the discount amount is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage divided by 100. A ₹2,000 item at 20% off saves you ₹400, for a final price of ₹1,600.

Stacked discounts don't add up the way you'd expect

If a store offers 20% off, then an additional 10% off the discounted price, the two discounts don't combine to 30% off. Instead, each discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the true combined discount is slightly less than 30% — the "Apply a second successive discount" option in this calculator handles that correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 20% discount plus a 10% discount equal 30% off?

No. Successive discounts multiply rather than add, so 20% then 10% off works out to 28% total savings, not 30%.

How do I calculate the amount I saved?

Subtract the final price from the original price — that difference is your total savings.
